Grade 5 Reading performance by gender
A roughly equal number of grade five girls and boys in Papua New Guinea had their performance analysed in the PILNA 2021 reading assessment: 52% girls and 48% boys.
Figure CRF5.3 shows the average reading performance of grade five students in Papua New Guinea by gender. On average, grade five girls (515.04, SD = 57.25) scored higher than grade five boys (504.78, SD = 58.86) in PILNA 2021. This was consistent with the reading performance in the 2015 and 2018 PILNA cycles, when, on average, grade five girls scored higher than grade five boys, see Figure CRF5.4.
