A roughly equal number of the scores of year four girls and boys was analysed in the PILNA 2021 reading assessment: 10,221 year four girls’ scores and 10,517 year four boys’ scores.

Figure RRF4.2 shows the average reading performance of year four students by gender. On average, year four girls (457.27, SD = 78.86) scored higher than year four boys (432.52, SD = 84.18) in reading.

This is consistent with the trends shown in the 2015 and 2018 PILNA cycles, when year four girls scored higher than year four boys in reading performance.
