Lifting numeracy performance: Recommendations for teachers
SPC experts have identified areas that many students commonly misunderstood or answered incorrectly in the PILNA 2021 numeracy assessment. These areas may have specific teaching and learning challenges that are limiting student performance.
Three main areas were identified from the PILNA 2021 numeracy assessment: solving word problems involving numbers; identifying and interpreting data presented in graphs; and subtracting simple sets of numbers.
To improve performance in these areas, the following sections describe these problems, give examples with results from PILNA 2021, and provide recommendations for teachers to improve student outcomes in these areas.
