Lifting reading performance: Recommendations for teachers
SPC experts have identified areas that many students commonly misunderstood or answered incorrectly in the PILNA 2021 reading assessment. These areas may have specific teaching and learning challenges that are limiting student performance.
Two main areas were identified: identifying information from text and describing character behaviour from evidence in text.
To improve performance in these areas, the following sections describe these types of problems, give examples with results from PILNA 2021, and provide recommendations for teachers to improve student outcomes in these areas.
