Grade 5 Numeracy mean performance in domain and strands by gender

Mean performance of Grade 5 students by domain and strands by gender, Palau, PILNA 2021

Figure CNF5.4 shows the average numeracy performance of grade five students in Palau by gender. Grade five girls scored about the same as grade five boys in most numeracy areas, including the overall numeracy score. The exception was in the ‘Data’ strand, where girls performed slightly better than boys. Gender differences in numeracy scores from previous PILNA cycles do not show any clear trends.

As seen in Figure CNF5.4.1, in PILNA 2018, the overall numeracy score for girls was about the same as for boys and, in PILNA 2015, the overall numeracy score for girls was slightly higher than for boys. Strand scores from previous PILNA cycles show that girls scored higher than boys in most areas in 2018 and 2015, although most differences were small. Further statistical testing needs to be performed to understand if these differences in scores are significant or the result of chance or outliers.
