Year 6 Numeracy performance by school authority
Most year six students in Tuvalu who had their performance analysed in the PILNA 2021 numeracy assessment were enrolled in government schools: 85% in government schools and 15% in non-government schools.
Figure CNF6.5 shows the average performance of year six students by school authority. The performance of students in government schools and non-government schools was relatively similar. In most numeracy areas, students in government schools scored slightly higher than students in non-government schools, but these differences were only small. The one larger difference was in the ‘Measurement & Geometry’ strand, where students in government schools scored higher than students in non-government schools by over 10 points. Further statistical testing needs to be done to understand if these differences in scores are significant or the result of chance or outliers.
Similar performance trends are seen in PILNA 2018, although their differences were larger than those in PILNA 2021 (Figure CNF6.5.1). In 2018, students in government schools scored higher in all numeracy areas than students in non-government schools.
