Grade 5 Reading mean performance by school locality
Three quarters of grade five students are enrolled in schools in urban areas.
Figure CRF5.7 shows the average performance of grade five students by school locality. In non-urban schools, the students achieved higher results on average in the overall reading domain than did those in urban schools. In previous PILNA cycles, urban and non-urban schools had comparable average reading scores for grade five students. In 2021, however, while there was little difference between 2018 and 2021 reading scores for non-urban students, urban students had scores 36 points lower than in 2018, Figure CRF5.8.
